In a bizarre occurrence that seems straight out of a horror movie, stretch spiders have taken over the shores of a lagoon on a Western Greek island. This unusual event isn’t new; the last time these arachnids made an appearance here was back in 2003. The spiders are currently enjoying a feast on massive swarms of mosquitoes. Once they’ve had their fill, they’ll turn their attention to mating.

But before you panic and think the apocalypse is upon us, rest easy knowing this spectacle will only last for a few days.

“When conditions such as plentiful food, warm temperatures, and adequate humidity converge, it allows for a rapid increase in animal populations,” explained molecular biologist Maria Chatzaki from Democritus University of Thrace in Greece. “This phenomenon is a result of the spider population exploding.”

That said, those among us who suffer from arachnophobia might find it hard to sleep tonight, aware that these little critters are lurking nearby.

It's temporary and harmless—well, except for your nightmares.

There’s no need to fret about the other creatures underneath this vast network of webs.

“These spiders pose no threat to humans and will not harm the local flora,” Chatzaki shared with Newsit.gr. “They’ll indulge in their feast and eventually perish.”

However, just because this bizarre event is happening far away doesn’t mean it can’t occur closer to home. In Dallas, Texas, a once-quiet roadside became a scene draped in webs.

But wait—could there be a silver lining?

Indeed, there is a bright side to this phenomenon. These spiders are effectively preying on mosquitoes while spinning their expansive webs that can stretch over 1,000 feet.

Anything that tackles mosquitoes gets a thumbs up from me!
