Tour of Algarve’s opening stage is scrapped after peloton goes wrong way

The opening stage of the Tour of Algarve took a dramatic turn on Wednesday, as confusion and disarray took over the race. Just prior to crossing the finish line, a crucial mistake sent most of the peloton off course, prompting the organizers to annul the stage results.

As cyclists approached a roundabout close to the finish, the lead car inadvertently directed itself away from the correct path, leading a significant portion of the pack to follow suit. Onlookers were left puzzled as they witnessed the spectacle of two separate races occurring simultaneously.

In an unexpected outcome, Italy’s Filippo Ganna seized the opportunity amidst the chaos, crossing the line in what appeared to be a straightforward sprint victory. However, his moment of triumph was fleeting, as no official winner was recognized, leaving the podium in Lagos devoid of any celebrations. The arduous 192.2km trek from Portimão concluded in disappointment for all participants.

Race officials issued a statement clarifying, “As the riders neared the finish in Lagos, a significant portion of the peloton took a wrong turn, leading them off the designated route.” The College of Commissaires faced the challenging task of voiding the stage results, citing a lack of fairness in the chaotic finish.

As the peloton gears up for the second stage on Thursday, all riders will start anew with a clean slate. It’s an opportunity for everyone to move past the chaotic opening stage and concentrate on the upcoming challenges that await them.
