Red Bull Parts Ways with Sergio Pérez After Challenging Season
In a significant move, Red Bull has announced that they will no longer be working with Sergio Pérez following a season that fell short of expectations in the world of Formula One. Pérez, who joined the team in 2021, faced increasing pressure as the season unfolded, ultimately finishing a staggering 285 points behind his teammate, Max Verstappen. This disappointing performance also contributed to Red Bull losing the constructors’ championship title to McLaren.
Meanwhile, Verstappen celebrated his fourth consecutive drivers’ world title, while Pérez found it difficult to leave a mark, ending the season in eighth place in the standings. Over the last 18 races with the team, Pérez did not manage to achieve a single top-five finish, underscoring the struggles he faced throughout the season.
Pérez expressed his appreciation for his tenure at Red Bull, stating, “I am extremely thankful for the past four years with Oracle Red Bull Racing and for the chance to compete with such a remarkable team. Racing for Red Bull has been an unforgettable journey, and I will always treasure the achievements we made together. We set records, reached incredible milestones, and I was fortunate enough to meet so many wonderful people along the way.”
In terms of succession, reports indicate that 22-year-old New Zealander Liam Lawson is likely to step in for Pérez at Red Bull. Lawson has already gained experience by racing in 11 events for the team’s sister organization, RB.
Team principal Christian Horner acknowledged Pérez’s struggles, which ultimately affected their championship aspirations. However, he commended Pérez for his significant contributions to the team’s success in previous years, emphasizing his role in securing constructors’ titles and providing critical support to Verstappen during pivotal races.
“Although Checo won’t be racing for us next season, he will always be a beloved member of the team and an integral part of our history. Thank you, Checo,” Horner stated in a heartfelt farewell to Pérez.
