Unveiling the World’s Oldest Forest

Have you ever come across the tale of the world’s oldest forest? Researchers from the Universities of Cambridge and Cardiff have made an intriguing discovery in England—a 390-million-year-old fossilized forest nestled along striking sandstone cliffs.

This ancient woodland, unlike anything we encounter today, is the subject of a recent publication in the Journal of Geological Study. The trees, which bear a resemblance to enormous thistles reaching heights of 13 feet, are among the earliest known to have existed on our planet. A notable characteristic of these trees, scientifically referred to as Calamophyton, is their hollow trunks made up of numerous smaller trunk-like structures. As these trees matured, they would eventually separate into multiple parts.

According to Neil Davies, a professor in Earth Sciences at Cambridge, this forest appears “pretty weird” when compared to modern-day woodlands. The landscape was devoid of undergrowth and grass, featuring a dense assembly of trees that shed twigs, which significantly shaped the surrounding environment.

Located in South West England, particularly within the counties of Devon and Somerset, this ancient forest reveals fossilized remnants, including logs, branches, and stumps that offer a glimpse into the Devonian Period—a pivotal era in Earth’s history. This time frame witnessed the rise of the first land animals and the development of seed-bearing plants.

The discovery holds valuable insights into how these primeval forests influenced the land, as the branches of these trees contributed to sediment accumulation and altered the flow of ancient rivers. Davies highlighted the profound implications of the Devonian period on Earth’s ecosystems, noting that much remains unknown about the earliest forests.
