Patrick Dempsey: A Journey of Health and Hope
In the fast-paced world of photo shoots, film projects, and the thrill of racing cars, Patrick Dempsey finds a way to dedicate his time to a cause close to his heart—empowering individuals to attain their healthiest selves. His early experiences with his mother’s battle against cancer in the 1990s, and the subsequent recurrences she faced, left a profound impact on him. “I felt utterly helpless,” he confided in a conversation with Men’s Health.
The Birth of the Dempsey Center
Fast forward to 2008, Dempsey established the Dempsey Center, a comprehensive health facility located in his hometown of Lewiston, Maine, dedicated to supporting those affected by cancer. This center is a sanctuary for cancer patients and their families, guiding them through the complexities of their journey. It also offers screenings and prevention workshops aimed at the local community. In partnership with the American Cancer Society, the Dempsey Center launched Change the Odds—an initiative designed to address cancer disparities in underprivileged communities.
Redefining Health as He Approaches His 60s
As Dempsey approaches his 60s, he is rethinking what it means to be healthy for himself. In an open discussion, he shared insights on how he is taking proactive measures to secure his future while encouraging others to do the same.
Understanding His Family Health History
“My father passed away when I was young due to heart disease, and my mother fought ovarian cancer starting in the late 90s, enduring 12 recurrences over 17 years. This family history fuels my commitment to health. Regular cancer screenings are essential for me, given my genetic background. They lay the groundwork for my overall well-being. Just this week, I completed some screenings, and I have a colonoscopy scheduled for next month. Staying on top of your family’s medical history is crucial; early detection can greatly enhance survival rates,” Dempsey stressed.
The Challenge of Accessing Healthcare in Rural Areas
Accessing healthcare can be particularly challenging in rural regions. With many rural hospitals closing, the journey to see a doctor can be daunting, discouraging many from seeking necessary medical attention. Dempsey’s upbringing in a remote area makes this issue particularly relevant to him. To help bridge this gap, he founded the Dempsey Center, which provides holistic care options in rural Maine, the same area where his mother received treatment. The center goes beyond conventional healthcare by offering services such as counseling, Reiki, acupuncture, massage, nutrition workshops, screenings, and support for survivors.
Maintaining Personal Health
On a personal health note, Dempsey keeps a close watch on his high cholesterol and is mindful of his diet and exercise routine. Cycling is his preferred form of exercise, which culminates in the annual Dempsey Challenge, a fundraising event for the Center. Even a brisk 20-minute workout each day can significantly boost one’s overall health. The physical demands of racing keep him fit, and he stays motivated by setting yearly fitness goals.
The Power of Group Workouts
Dempsey is a strong proponent of group workouts, believing they help maintain accountability and motivation. While there are tough days, the satisfaction that comes from completing a workout is rewarding. Having a supportive team can be transformative in staying committed to fitness.
A Beacon of Hope
In a world where cancer diagnoses are unfortunately common, Dempsey’s unwavering dedication to health and wellness shines as a beacon of hope and inspiration for many individuals.
