When I first ventured onto TikTok, my mission was clear: to engage with a wider audience and introduce them to the African net sponge, known as Sapo—a beloved item from my childhood in West Africa. This environmentally friendly alternative to traditional loofahs is not only durable but also quick-drying, long-lasting, and machine washable.
Creating content around the benefits of the African net sponge quickly resonated with viewers. In August 2023, one of my videos went viral, leading to an astonishing 300 orders within just one day. This initial success set the stage for an unexpected boom in November, when we received 10,000 orders over a single weekend. It was a whirlwind experience, as we enlisted the help of family and friends to manage the surge, evolving from a small basement operation into a full-fledged team of seven employees shipping out 500 orders each day.
Our direct collaboration with suppliers based in Nigeria has not only propelled our growth but also significantly improved their livelihoods, expanding from a modest team of two to a robust workforce of 100. This narrative of growth and community impact resonates deeply with our customers, who value our commitment to making a difference both locally and globally.
Although the future of TikTok Shop is somewhat uncertain—especially since it accounts for 85% of our business—we remain hopeful about finding new paths for growth and maintaining our connection with our community. While the journey has had its challenges, the potential for new opportunities and continued community impact inspires us to keep pushing forward.
