It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Olympic snowboarder Sophie Hediger due to a tragic avalanche incident in Arosa on Monday, as confirmed by the Swiss-Ski federation.
At just 26 years old, Hediger was an exceptional athlete on the snowboard cross national team. She showcased her skills on the world stage during the 2022 Winter Olympics in China and had recently celebrated her first two podium finishes in the World Cup for the 2023-24 season, marking her as a promising talent in the sport.
Walter Reusser, the Swiss-Ski sport chief executive, expressed his heartfelt condolences, stating, “We are struggling to find the right words during this time, and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family. We extend our deepest sympathies. The Swiss-Ski community is profoundly affected by the loss of Sophie, particularly in this holiday season.”
Out of respect for her family and loved ones, the federation has chosen not to release additional details surrounding Hediger’s death. This decision has been made in close coordination with her family and partner during this challenging period.
The snowboarding community mourns the loss of a shining star in Sophie Hediger, and her legacy will surely endure in the memories of those who knew her and admired her talent.
