Tragic Loss of Former Orioles Pitcher Brian Matusz
Brian Matusz, a former pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles, has sadly passed away at the age of 37, reportedly due to a drug overdose according to police sources.
The Orioles organization confirmed Matusz’s passing last week. A report from the Phoenix Police Department, which was reviewed by the Baltimore Banner, reveals that Matusz’s mother, Elizabeth, found him unresponsive at his home on January 6th while checking in on him. Near his body, authorities discovered several items often associated with drug use, including a lighter, a straw, and aluminum foil. The report indicates that there are no indications of foul play surrounding his death.
According to the same report, Elizabeth Matusz had brought her son to the emergency room just days before his death, where medical professionals recommended that he seek mental health support upon his discharge. Although Brian had a past struggle with substance abuse, he had reportedly maintained sobriety for the eight months leading up to this tragic event.
The Orioles released a heartfelt statement expressing their deep sorrow over the loss of Matusz. They fondly remembered him as a cherished team member from 2009 to 2016, known for his strong ties to the community and his ever-present smile. The team extended their thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
Matt Hobgood, a former teammate of Matusz, shared a touching tribute on social media, highlighting the kindness and support Matusz offered him when he first began his journey with the Orioles.
Drafted by Baltimore as the fourth overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft, Matusz had a standout collegiate career at the University of San Diego. He made his major league debut in 2009 and enjoyed a successful career, notably being part of the Chicago Cubs team that won the World Series in 2016.
In 2017, Matusz signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing for a team in his hometown of Phoenix. His impact as a skilled pitcher and a cherished teammate will be remembered by many within the baseball community.
