Recently emerging in the diet world is something known as the ‘pure protein diet,’ also referred to as the carnivore diet or the zero-carb diet. This approach emphasizes consuming only meat protein, completely disregarding vegetables, fruits, and any non-meat items.

“Would you care for a touch of defiance with your steak, sir?”

This diet has gained traction, particularly among some conspiracy theorists, cryptocurrency enthusiasts, and those who enjoy provoking progressive individuals.

Indeed, you read that correctly.

Due to the environmentally damaging aspects of industrial meat production, some conservatives are opting for a ribeye steak specifically because it might irk those with more liberal views. This behavior mirrors other extreme reactions, such as purchasing additional firearms when discussions of gun control arise or sharing images of straws after they’ve been banned in eateries.

In essence, it’s a loud “Take that, liberals!” response, amplified. (And speaking of amplifying things, proponents of this diet claim it enhances libido and testosterone levels. Boom, take that, milquetoast liberals! Yet, it’s worth mentioning that heavy meat consumption has also been linked to lower sperm counts… oh well.)

Interestingly, one of the founders of the Paleo diet, John Durant, who authored The Paleo Manifesto, has described this all-meat approach as a counter to the “leftist plant-based movement.”

As for the other supporters, including conspiracy theorists and Bitcoin advocates… let’s dive deeper.

Just because you’re suspicious doesn’t mean there isn’t a plot.

“Bitcoin represents a rebellion against fiat [government-backed] currency, and an all-meat diet signifies a rebellion against fiat food,” stated Michael Goldstein, a self-identified “Bitcoin and meat maximalist” from Austin, Texas. “Once someone becomes adept at seeing through the falsehoods peddled by experts in one area, it becomes easier to do so in other realms as well.”

I’ll just leave that thought here…

So… while this might seem peculiar at first, is there any merit? What about the risks?

Advocates for this diet claim it alleviates symptoms of arthritis and depression. Shawn Baker, a former orthopedic surgeon whose medical license has been revoked, asserts that chronic ailments can be reversed through this dietary choice. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that none of these assertions have been scientifically validated or researched.

Indeed, Christopher Gardner, a medicine professor at Stanford University, casts doubt on this dietary path. “Are we talking about T-rexes? African lions? Or humans? If it’s for humans, this sounds catastrophic on many levels,” he expressed to The Guardian. “I believe the ‘carnivore diet’ is detrimental to human health, harmful to our planet’s well-being, exploitative of the workforce involved in meat preparation, and neglectful of animal rights and welfare.”

Hold on there, Meat Enthusiast!

Relying solely on meat can lead to a lack of essential nutrients, and there are numerous diseases linked to deficiencies of vital vitamins—scurvy being just one example. Additionally, the correlation between saturated fats from animal sources and heart disease is well established.

Considering all these factors, exercising caution seems to be the most prudent approach.
